The Museum of Extinct Animals
Moooi sailed away on a bold adventure around the globe and digged up the dustiest of museum archives in order to find invaluable treasures: the drawings of lost animals, trimmed by imagination. The most invaluable treasure from past and present expeditions is the unexpected diversity of beauty, in all its forms…
For Moooi, unique drawings of forgotten species were made available by museums and archives from all over the world. Inspired by ten magnificent extinct animal drawings, Moooi created designs for surfaces: a new collection of fabrics and leathers, wall coverings and Carpets that bring the Extinct Animals back to life!
The Museum of Extinct Animals inspired The Extinct Animals Fabric Collection. Moooi dived into the world of fabrics and leathers and emerged with a unique collection of fabrics based on the animals’ features.
The Extinct Animals Fabric Collection are a force of nature to be reckoned with! Their organic structures, extreme softness or roughness, their landscapes and geometric patterns are reminders of the wonders of nature. They embody not only the extinct animals’ looks and textures but also their tactual feel. An assortment of high-quality materials serves this purpose. They range from high pile cotton velvet to jacquards, from treated leathers to mohair and fluffy fur.

Flying Coral Fish Scaled
Resembling a light and airy dragonfly when in flight, the ethereal Flying Coral Fish was covered in beautiful pale blue-grey scales. Only sorcery could explain a fish with wings, gliding as high as six meters above the sea.
Armoured Boar Hairy
The first time an Armoured Boar was spotted by the human eye, the man didn’t know whether to hug it or run! But when they looked very closely, they could see its soft, and hairy hide underneath that hard armour. Revealing the animals’ true amiable nature.
Armoured Boar Crackle
Studies from the past suggest that the Armoured Boar’s coat was a protection developed over time as a weapon against animals of pray. Protecting its hairy hide with a strong, but butter-soft crackled leather armour that protected him from animals higher up the food-chain.
Dwarf Rhino Crackle
After polishing the hard plates that covered their body, male Dwarf Rhinos would bathe their outfit, and afterwards let it dry in the scalding sun. Causing a beautiful and unique crackled pattern in their protective plates.
Dwarf Rhino Buffed
The velvety feel and dusty blue-grey hues of the Buffed Dwarf Rhino fabric derives from the exact moment after the male Dwarf Rhinos ‘polished’ their outfit, during mating season, by rubbing it against rough terrain.
Blushing Sloth Melange Mohair
Asleep most of the time, Blushing Sloths hardly caused a leaf to stir. Curled up in the highest branches of a tree, these shy sweethearts only came down once a week, moving so slow that it was impossible to even see them move. Inspired by the Blushing Sloth’s coat, Moooi designers created a fabric honouring the Blushing Sloth’s curls.
Blushing Sloth Woolly Mohair
This woolly interpretation of the Blushing Sloth’s liveliness has anyone resigning to sleeping twenty hours a day. Soft, warm and cosy are this fabrics’ characteristics, which are so aligned with the friendly and cuddly personality of this shy animal.
The Silent Bison Velvet
Although Bisons weren’t known for their litheness, The Silent Bison was the exception to the rule. Tiptoeing calmly towards you, her gentle face adorned with pretty prongs, the sweet Silent Bison had no problems with the adventurers stroking her lush furry coat. That very coat serving as an inspiration for the high-pile cotton velvet that is The Silent Bison Velvet.
