You could call the Random Light by Bertjan Pot Moooi heritage. The ethereal design was one of the first in our collection, and twenty years later this contemporary beauty is still going strong. A Moooi original loved by many all over the world.
Did you know? Bertjan Pot preferred to deliver his first Random Light personally. However, the design didn’t fit his car. Holding on to his design, he would carefully bike to the train station hoping it wouldn’t be too windy. He then took the train, needing two seats because of the size of the Random Light. He made quite a sight back then.
The story of a Moooi Original
Bertjan Pot, the designer of the Random Light, is more of a contemporary inventor than a designer. The Random Light was his first design for Moooi, and like all his other designs, it started out as an experiment for an interior object. After graduating from the renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven (NL), Pot started experimenting with the remains of his graduation project. His experiment resulted in the first Random Light.
In 2001, Founder and Art Director for Moooi, Marcel Wanders was carefully curating design pieces for Moooi’s collection. He looked for designs that were clever, intriguing, and put a smile on his face. From the start he was impressed with Pot’s clever experiment, thinking it would be a perfect fit for a brand like Moooi. After three years of perfecting the production process, the Random Light joined the Moooi collection and became an instant icon!

Reintroducing: Random Floor Lamp II
The first Random Floor Lamp was introduced in 2010. Eleven years later we’re proud to present the Random Floor Lamp II — an aesthetically perfected design that holds the same simplicity and lightness as the rest of its family members.
The Random Light Floor Lamp diffuses light in all directions, lighting up every dark corner.
Modernised and better than ever
Twenty years later, the Random Light is as relevant and eye-catching as ever. To honour the extraordinary designs in our collection, we further improve our Moooi Originals. Together with designer Bertjan Pot, we updated the Random Light with better user-experience and the original idea as the key focus. The Random Light II is an aesthetically perfected and user-friendly design, with an enlarged life cycle.
The production process is a special story by itself: a resin drained yarn is randomly coiled around an inflatable beach ball creating a translucent 3D fabric. After deflating, the beach ball is extracted from the round opening in the design and the shade is left to dry. Because of how they’re made, every Random Light is unique and never completely round.
The Random Light II is a contemporary design that brings a feeling of simplicity and softness into any home. The Random Light family comes in black and white and is available as a suspension light and a floor lamp both in varied sizes.
